I've had an exciting life, I think—shootings and cuttings and high speed chases—far too many wives and way too little money. Yes, life was exciting when I was a randy young policeman working the mean streets of Denver . . . every day was an adventure!

Legends in our own minds, each of us share a similar family history . . . people with parents who loved us and taught us the difference between right and wrong, and just like our spouses, feared for our safety every day we walked in harm's way. Not really the Superman little kids see us as or the Stormtroopers far too many people choose to believe we are, but ordinary people just trying to do the right thing.

So, this is my story. Told from a police officer's cynical yet humorous point of view, it's a warm and loving family history, rich with snippets of family lore and detailed memories that began well before the blood and gore of the police world, and continuing into the safety and comfort of my retirement years. It's proof that you don't have to be shot in order to have a story worth telling.

I loved the peek into life in rural America in the early 1900's through the depression era , WWII and denver, Colorado in the 1950's and 60's. The author's writting brought it to life for me. Also, his accounts of his years on the Denver Police Department were especially interesting to me as I spent 35 years with the Department. Lt. Aumiller did a great job with this autobiograghy. Well worth the read.

I am also a retired Denver Police Officer, I found Bill's book so fascinating that I could not put it down. I finished it in two days. I would recommend this book to anyone who has been in law enforcement. Bill has a way of writing that captivates the reader. Can't wait until he has another book coming out.
I knew one of your partners from the Denver Police Department so I was initially interested in reading only the chapter that you had dedicated to him. I was able to visual everything about that special day you shared with him and became hooked on wanting to know more about your life experiences. Your autobiography is very interesting and well written. Your wit adds another level of entertainment value.
I grew up in Denver and have to say that Bill has an excellent recall of his years in the Qween City. He had to have spent a lot of time driving around checking the accuracy of the address's in this work. Also, he obviously did his home work when he was gathering information from his ageing relatives. If I were to attempt such a work, (a dream of mine) I would soon discover that it's too late. This is not only a well written, interesting book, but an absolute gem for those of you that are into Denver history.
Day one

Just as I came in the garage door the mailman rang the front doorbell and your book had

arrived. Needless to say, nothing more is going to get done tonight. I'll be reading until my eyes

cross. I couldn't wait to start it. So I did. I am up to Chapter 4 and loving every word. Such great

stories about your Grandma Oldson and the way all your family lived in the OLD days. Great

history for the younger people to learn how things really were and how hard staying alive could

be. Young people today have no idea what strength was needed just for everyday living. I had to

quit reading long enough to put the meat away from the store but the canned goods can wait.

Back to the book.

I am half way through the book and loving it. You are a very good writer. You make it easy to

visualize everything. I did manage to fix something to eat and wash the dishes, not dried but

better than nothing and the groceries are still setting on the washer and dryer.

Back to the book, no times out.

Next morning

If you ever had any doubts that you have a great book here, rest assured that it is a

WONDERFUL family history and a little spice (maybe a lot) never hurts. The truth is always

better than fiction. It is 816 am, and I have finished your book and loved every word in it. I

think that it would make a great movie. You really do have a wonderful way with words and

make the reader (me) visualize everything that is happening. Your police actions are realistic

too. Makes me want to read more of them. I also like your title, "Better Rags." You've come a

long way, baby! Be proud of what you have done. Not many people have a "Book" among their

talents and you certainly did. Do.

It is too bad more people aren't talented or brave enough to write a real family history with no

punches pulled. You didn't glamorize yourself or your life. So, please get busy on your next

book, I'm waiting....

"I knew them all." That's the thought I had when I read Better Rags. Bill's family and friends growing up were like mine. His experiences were similar. He had such great detail I could see them all and felt that I knew them. Bill painted a comprehensive picture of his life and what it's like to be a cop and part of the "thin blue line." I believe what he disclosed about his personal life and his life in law enforcement was only the tip of the iceberg. I think he gave the readers just a sample in the book and that is enough to make us appreciate Bill and his fellow officers who put their lives on the line for us every day. I asked Bill how he could believe in God anymore after all he went through and what he's seen. He assured me that he is still a man of faith. God bless him!
easy reading
I've met the author and the book is great. You have to have a sense of humor to get this book. Great read liked it so much reading again
