IT WAS Saturday afternoon about 3 o'clock. There was the usual scene; outside the Gates of Bercy there was a crowd of people, and on the quays, four rows deep, carts and wagons were massed together. Coal carts, carts heaped with hay and straw, all were waiting in the clear, warm June sunshine for the examination from the custom official. All had been hurrying to reach Paris before Sunday.

NOTE: this is a review of the July 2010 edition only. i don't know why it is appearing under the 1922 hardcopy edition that i am considering for purchase. .~. i am sooo disappointed. i was looking forward to rediscovering this lovely story after four decades, a favorite from my childhood. this is a cheaply produced manuscript in very light, mono-spaced (courier) type, with no illustrations and an unfriendly 8.5" x 11" x 0.5" format. it even has an amateurishly designed, butt ugly cover. it's going right back. .~. UPDATE: amazon refunded my original purchase, and i am not even required to return the book.Product details

Nobody Girl Hector Malot 9781517284794 Books Reviews
I really enjoyed this book. I was so involved in the story I was giving advice to the girl as I read! Definitely a great read and interesting look at life in th mid 50's.
A baby abandoned on the steps of an orphanage. As she turns of age, she makes a life for herself and works hard to be part of the community. A child goes missing and the village is uneasy. Sometimes help comes in unexpected ways - you just need faith to keep going
The product was in the condition described and promised by seller. It was a used book so was not in pristine condition, but that was indicated by the discription. The illustrations in the book are lovely and the book pages were very acceptable. The story is wonderful and heart warming.
One of my favorite books when I was growing up was Noboby's Boy also by Hector Malot (also ordered recently from & I was very please with that item too & very happy to have the old edition again in my library). I didn't know that there was a Nobody's Girl & have thoroughly enjoyed it.
I searched for this after enjoying the Perrine television series from the Classics of World Children's Literature. We liked the show, but my children couldn't understand it, as it was never dubbed into English. It took a while to find a reasonably priced copy, but has just about everything. The pages were yellowed from age, but otherwise in good condition. There are no pictures, this is an old fashioned chapter-a-night bedtime story that children as well as adults will enjoy.
This is not a complete edition but a short version of the original. The "Introduction" mention that some parts of the book ("irrelevant for readers in America") were eliminated. Unfortunately, the `s description of the print does not mention that detail.
I had loved this book as a child and had purchased to give as a Christmas gift for family. The font size is absurdly small. Needless to say, I would not insult anyone with this unnecessary reading experience.
I also had ordered 'Nobody's Boy,' by same author, and print is rather large, as though a child's primer. Publisher has taken fine literature and spoiled the reading experience. Who made these absurd decisions?
I was thrilled to find this book was still in print. It’s an excellent story that follows the author’s earlier work, NOBODY’S BOY. I’m 74 years old and still remember both of Hector’s books. That’s how much I liked them. I highly recommend this book for your children.
